Scottish Cup

THE Scottish Cup made in Glasgow by George Edwards and Sons of Buchanan Streetis the oldest national trophy in world football being minted in 1885

The first ever Scottish Cup final was played at First Hampden Park in front of approximately 2,500 spectators. Queen's Park faced nearby rivals Clydesdale.

The Scottish Cup started in the 1873-74 season, and was contested by 16 teams. The trophy was first awarded to Queen's Park when they beat Clydesdale 2–0 in the final in front of a crowd of 3,000 people.

The cup holds the record for the biggest victory in World senior football, when on 12 September 1885 Abroath  beat Bon Accord 36–0

In 1909 there was no Scottish Cup awarded, the SFA withholding the cup and medals after Rangers and Celtic played out two draws. Spectators, unsurprisingly, rioted.

The first and last Scottish Cup Finals to attract six-figure crowds both involved the Old Firm. In 1928, 118,115 watched Rangers beat Celtic 4-0 and in the Cup's centenary year 1973 a crowd of 122,714 saw Rangers win 3-2.

The record cup final attendance was in 1937 when 147,365 spectators, a world record for a club match at that time, saw Celtic beat Aberdeen 2-1.  The largest attendance for a final and replay was in 1948 when 129,176 watched the first match between Rangers and Morton and 131,975 the replay on the Wednesday. Rangers won by a solitary goal.

Rangers'  John Fleck made history in May 2008 by becoming the youngest player to feature in a Scottish Cup Final.

The first final to be decided on penalties was in 1990 when Aberdeen beat Celtic 9–8 on penalties after a 0–0 draw.

No team has ever won the cup more than three times in succession. The clubs who have won three times in a row are Queen’s Park, Vale of Leven, Rangers and Aberdeen.

Clyde can boast that they have held on the Scottish Cup for longer than anyone else.  They won the trophy 4-0 in 1939. It was the first time Clyde won the Cup and they held on to it for the next eight years following the outbreak of the Second World War.

In 1879 Vale of Leven won the Scottish Cup despite the game ending 1-1.  Rangers protested that they had scored another goal and refused to reply.

In 1977 Alfie Conn became the first player to win Scottish Cup Finals with both Old Firm teams. In 1973, he scored the second goal in a 3-2 final victory over Celtic at Hampden Park.  In 1977 he won another Scottish Cup medal with Celtic when they defeated Rangers 1-0 in the final.

The Scottish Cup fixture between Inverness Thistle and Falkirk in 1979 was postponed a record 29 times.  It was scheduled for 6 January and was not played until 22 February.

Charlie Tully scored direct from a corner for Celtic against Falkirk in the Cup during the 1952-53 season.  The kick had to be taken because the crowd had come on to the pitch, so Tully repeated the feat.

When Rangers lost 3-2 to Hibs in the Scottish Cup quarter-final in 1896, keeper John Bell took it very personally.  Blaming himself for the defeat he changed without speaking to anyone, and walked away from the ground, never to return.
