Scottish League Cup
Celtic’s 7-1 victory over Rangers in the Scottish League Cup Final in 1958 remains the largest score in any British final. The League Cup competition was first introduced in Scotland in 1947. Rangers won that first final 4-0 against Aberdeen. In the 1968 final, Celtic put five goals past Dundee, and in the 1969 final six past Hibernian The League Cup was originally known as the Southern League Cup between 1940 and 1947 and was created as a replacement for the cancelled FA Cup during the war period. In the eighties the tournament was revamped with the finals being played before Christmas! The competitions has taken its name from many sponsors, the Bell’s League Cup, the Skol Cup, the Coca-Cola Cup and the CIS Insurance Cup. Until recent years the winners were offered a UEFA Cup place. While the
competition was sponsored by Skol, a second trophy was given to the winners. In 1988, after winning
the Skol Cup for the third time Rangers were allowed to keep the Skol Trophy
permanently. |
