Welsh Football

The first winners were Wrexham who beat Druids in the Final.

Until 1995, clubs playing in those parts of England close to the Welsh border could also play in the Welsh Cup, but could not progress to the European Cup Winners' Cup by winning the cup.

Wrexham beat Shrewsbury 7-0 in the 1931 Cup Final.

Llansantffraid were the first club to win the Welsh Cup in a penalty shoot-out.

Since 1995, only clubs playing in the Welsh football league system have been allowed to enter the Welsh Cup. This rule excludes the 6 Welsh clubs who play in the English football league system: Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham (the last English-oriented winner in 1995), Newport County, Merthyr Tydfil and Colwyn Bay.

Until 1992 Wales was almost unique in world football in that it didn't have a national league of its own.

Traditionally, the best teams in Wales had always played over the border in the English leagues. Aberdare Athletic, Cardiff City, Merthyr Town, Newport County, Swansea City and Wrexham have all been members of the Football League.

Barry Town has been by some way the most successful Welsh side in Europe in the league's 15-year history, winning a total of six games in Europe.

Borough United, of the Northern Welsh League, and the Welsh Cup holders were the first non-League team to win a European tie when they eliminated Sliema Wanderers in the first round of the European Cup Winners Cup.  They drew the home game 0-0 and then won 2-0 in Malta.
